The 7th Annual Native Son Awards took place on Wednesday night at The IAC Building, celebrating black gay excellence with honorees like Law Roach and Jeremy Pope. The awards, founded in 2017 by Emil Wilbekin, aim to recognize black gay and queer men who are making significant impacts and challenging societal norms. Wilbekin, a well-known journalist, professor at FIT, and community organizer, emphasized the unique brilliance and aspirations of the community, highlighting the power of collective celebration.
Don Lemon, who has long supported the Native Son Awards, hosted the event. Both he and Wilbekin looked stylish in cream and white linen suits, reminiscent of a chic summer getaway in the Hamptons.
Claire Sulmers, CEO of Fashion Bomb Daily, attended in a glamorous black strapless sequined dress from Fashion Nova Curve, expressing her pride in being an LGBTQ+ ally and supporting the awards. She mingled with honorees like LaQuan Smith, Law Roach, and Jeremy Pope. LaQuan Smith, who presented an award to Law Roach, chose a chocolate draped top with black coated denim and maroon boots for the evening.
Law Roach, celebrated for styling stars like Zendaya and Celine Dion, wore a striking white pinstripe suit jacket accented with a black floral pin. Jeremy Pope, another honoree, opted for a modern all-black ensemble featuring a textured sleeveless top and wide leg trousers.
Lena Waithe also attended, sporting a nude double-breasted graphic suit paired with a wifebeater shirt, yellow durag, and pearl necklace for a cool, urban look. Other fashionable attendees included Ty Hunter and supermodel Joan Smalls, who both wore all-black outfits. Hunter’s outfit featured a black cropped blazer and wide-leg pants, accessorized with a metal emblem hat and layered necklaces, while Smalls exuded elegance in a black power suit.
