Image architect Law Roach joined NYFW founder Fern Mallis on Sunday evening to chat about his new book, “How To Build a Fashion Icon.” A huge crowd gathered outside the 92nd Street Y in New York, eagerly waiting for the fashion wisdom Roach would share, and he certainly delivered.

While Roach stunned in vibrant attire, Mallis sported a classic look with a white button-down shirt, black trousers, and statement necklaces. He shared a pivotal moment when his mother left him at 14, saying, “if you don’t work, you don’t eat.”

Despite his struggles, Roach escaped into the world of fashion, often thrifting with his grandmother. He emphasized that “the book is about how you make yourself an icon in whatever you do,” using clothes and fashion to boost confidence.
Beyond advice on making it in the fashion world, Roach recounted meeting Kanye West in 2009 at his Chicago store. Kanye’s visit put Roach on the map, leading to calls from stylists worldwide and sparking his career in styling.
Since that pivotal moment, Roach’s career has flourished. He now styles major stars including Zendaya, Celine Dion, and Megan Thee Stallion. His work with Zendaya, in particular, marked a turning point. Roach reminisced about meeting her when she was 13, noting the special quality she possessed that made an instant impression on him.
