Beep Beep! Guess who has the keys to the jeep? It’s LaQuan Smith, who’s speeding past his fellow designers with his Spring/Summer 2024 collection. This impressive collection made its debut Monday evening at Skylight at Essex Crossing, a venue in the Lower East Side.
Smith’s show drew in a bunch of celebrities, including Mary J Blige, Baby Face, Saweetie, and Karreuche Tran. He’s become a major figure in both the hip-hop world and Black culture. Known for designing for big names like Beyonce, Rihanna, and even Vice President Kamala Harris, his latest collection is sure to boost his already sky-high popularity.
The collection was eclectic and full of charisma. Models strutted down the runway in metallic outfits, signaling that shiny fabrics will be a big trend for Spring 2024. Backstage, Smith told the Hollywood Reporter that he took inspiration from Freddie Mercury and Barbarella, creating subtle hints of a sci-fi theme without going overboard.
The designs were imaginative and futuristic, with Smith taking bold risks that set his work apart. Picture this: mesh see-through bodysuits paired with metallic cargo pants featuring zipper details, and strapless dresses with sky-high slits revealing just the right amount of side hipbone.
He also showcased high-neck crystal chain tops worn by both male and female models, pieces that you can easily imagine on fashion icons like Lori Harvey and Kelly Rowland. It’s clear that LaQuan Smith designs for the “It Girl”—someone who’s stylishly bold and loves flaunting her body in a sexy, glamorous way.
