Invisible Beauty x BKc Exclusive Giveaway: Win a $225 Limited Edition Hoodie to Celebrate Bethann Hardison's

Bethann Hardison is widely regarded as the ultimate fashion ‘Godmother,’ having paved the way for women of color in the fashion industry for decades. As one of the first black models to walk the runways of 7th Avenue, which were predominantly reserved for white models in the 70s, Hardison became a much-needed catalyst for change in the industry.

Her documentary, “Invisible Beauty,” showcases her remarkable journey, including her modeling days, her relationship with her son Kadeem Hardison, her modeling agency, and the Black Girls Coalition, an advocacy group she founded for models of color.

Originally from the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, Hardison’s impact dates back to the late 60s when she was discovered by African American designer Willie Smith. She then went on to model across the world, including a memorable performance in France during the Battle of Versailles where she made a bold statement by placing an object on her head during designer Stephen Burrows’ debut.

In “Invisible Beauty,” Hardison recalls this moment, explaining how she took control and made sure the audience knew “We are here!” This was a defining moment in her career, proving her ability to challenge the fashion industry’s lack of diversity.

After retiring from modeling alongside Iman Abdulmajid, Hardison founded the Bethann Management Agency in 1984. The agency represented models like Naomi Campbell, Tyson Beckford, and Kimora Lee Simmons, pushing for more diversity on the runway and fighting against institutionalized racism. Hardison firmly believed that “Black is Beautiful,” working tirelessly to ensure models of color felt seen and valued.

Claire Sulmers, CEO of Fashion Bomb, met Hardison at the Sergio Hudson Fashion Show in Los Angeles and celebrated the “Invisible Beauty” film with Hardison’s son Kadeem and friends. Many, including Sulmers, are inspired by Hardison’s efforts to confront and change the inequalities in the fashion industry. While Hardison laid the groundwork, it’s up to all of us to continue fighting against discrimination.

In honor of the “Invisible Beauty” film, Fashion Bomb Daily has teamed up with Magnolia Pictures and Invisible Beauty to release an exclusive limited-edition hoodie by The BK Circus. The hoodie, celebrating Hardison’s legacy, has a double fleece-lined hood and body, with a “B” on the front and ‘Invisible Beauty’ on the back. You can enter to win this hoodie by liking the post, tagging a friend who should watch the documentary, and sharing it to your story with the appropriate tags.

“Invisible Beauty” is a documentary you don’t want to miss, especially if you are or aspire to be in the fashion industry. Bethann Hardison’s trailblazing efforts have provided a platform for many and have shown that inclusivity and diversity are vital. Without her relentless fight, the fashion world might not have seen the progress it has today. Her legacy as a true hero must be honored and continued.
