In August 2020, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) named CaSandra Diggs as their President. After three years in this leadership role, Diggs has decided to step down. This announcement comes during Black History Month and Fashion Week, sparking curiosity about what led to her decision.
Diggs had a long and successful tenure with the CFDA, serving over 20 years as the Chief Administrative and Financial Officer before being promoted to President. Her future at the CFDA seemed bright, thanks to her demonstrated excellence. However, as of yesterday, the CFDA has confirmed that Diggs has moved on, expressing gratitude for her contributions and wishing her well. The organization remains committed to supporting and strengthening American fashion by promoting creative excellence, business sustainability, and positive impact.
When Diggs took on the role of President, the world was amidst the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement. In June 2020, CFDA Chairman Tom Ford urged the board to address racial injustice and systemic racism within the fashion industry. Consequently, the CFDA issued a statement listing initiatives, such as an employment program aimed at fostering racial diversity within the industry.
While many organizations, including the CFDA, initially pledged to improve diversity in response to the BLM movement, efforts seemed to wane as time passed. Today, the fashion industry still struggles with black representation.
Many people, including our Fashion Bomb Daily readers, shared their thoughts on Instagram. Some felt that the post-pandemic focus on racial issues was fading quickly, while others believed that Diggs made her decision for her mental health.
We supported Diggs and appreciated seeing a woman of color in a high-ranking position, which is rare. Although she has resigned, we continue to support her and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
