Fashion Controversy: Adam Lippes and Oscar de la Renta Criticized for Outfitting Melania and Ivanka Trump at the Inauguration

On Martin Luther King Day in 2025, Donald J. Trump took office as the 47th President of the United States. The symbolism of the date wasn’t lost on those familiar with American history. Many Democrats expressed strong emotions of anger, disappointment, and dismay, even in the fashion community.

One notable instance involved designer Adam Lippes, who provided Melania Trump with an outfit for the occasion, completing her look with an Eric Javits hat and Manolo Blahnik shoes. Initially, Lippes disabled comments on his social media post about dressing the new First Lady. When he decided to allow comments, he promptly deleted any negative feedback.

Meanwhile, Oscar de la Renta dressed Ivanka Trump for pre-inauguration events and Vice President Vance’s wife, Usha Vance, for the main ceremony. His decision drew mixed reactions online. One user wrote, “Wow you dressed the entire group. Well, another brand to avoid,” while another questioned if the brand had become synonymous with the MAGA movement. Some even mentioned taking their ODLR dresses to consignment stores.

Andrea Nunez pointed out that fashion is supposed to be non-political and impartial. Many other commenters understood that designers might see dressing prominent women on such a global stage as a significant business opportunity.
