Controversy Surrounds Adam Lippes and Oscar de la Renta for Styling Melania and Ivanka Trump at the Presidential Inauguration

On Martin Luther King Day 2025, Donald J. Trump took office as the 47th President of the United States. The historical significance was clear to many. Democrats, including members of the fashion community, expressed strong emotions like anger and disappointment.

Designer Adam Lippes dressed Melania Trump for the event. Initially, he turned off comments on his post about the new First Lady. She wore a custom outfit by Lippes, an Eric Javits hat, and Manolo Blahnik shoes. Although Lippes later allowed comments, he removed any negative feedback.

Oscar de la Renta faced different reactions. The brand dressed Ivanka Trump for pre-inauguration events and Usha Vance, the Vice President’s wife, on the inauguration day. Some followers expressed their discontent on social media. One user said, “Wow, you dressed the entire group. Well, another brand to avoid,” while another commented, “So what, ODLR is the exclusive brand of MAGA Republicans now?”

However, many people defended the designers, noting that fashion is non-political and non-partisan. They understood the business motivation behind dressing prominent figures on such a significant global stage, seeing it as a valuable opportunity for brand exposure.
